Interim ChiefInterim Chief of Police

Col. Daniel W. Kelly was appointed interim chief of police for the Chesterfield County Police Department on Sept. 1, 2017, following the retirement of Col. Thierry G. Dupuis. Col. Kelly’s appointment will continue until the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors appoints a new police chief.

Col. Kelly began his law enforcement career in 1987 with the Chesterfield County Police Department. He has had a diverse career with assignments in each of the department’s four bureaus, the Office of Professional Standards, and the Office of the Chief. Most recently, Col. Kelly served as the department’s deputy chief of police of support.

Col. Kelly earned a bachelor’s degree in police science and a master’s degree in police administration from Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania.  He is also a graduate of North Carolina State University’s Administrative Officers Management Program (AOMP), the Professional Executive Leadership School (PELS) at the University of Richmond, the University of Virginia's Leading, Educating, and Developing (LEAD) program, Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police (VACP) New Chief and Deputy Chief training, and Leadership Metro Richmond (LMR).

Col. Kelly has served as a board member with Communities In Schools of Chesterfield County, Chesterfield CASA, and the Chesterfield Federal Credit Union.
