Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia
The Chesterfield Historical Society recently has moved its offices from
the historic 1917 Courthouse to Castlewood, the house located at the corner
of Krause and Iron Bridge roads.
Castlewood was built around 1817, and has a five-part plan differing
from any other recorded dwelling in Virginia. Its unique place in the
county's history makes it a fitting home for the Historical Society. The
home's builder, Parke Poindexter, was clerk to Chesterfield County's court
from 1812 until his death in 1847.
The house passed through several hands after Poindexter's death until
it became the parsonage for Trinity Methodist Church in 1860. In the 1920s,
it was inherited by James E. Lumpkin and, more than likely, the house
was named Castlewood at that time. In the 1950s, the interior and exterior
of the house was renovated. In 1976, Heritage Savings and Loan Association
purchased the land for use as a bank branch.
The county purchased the land and house in 1992 to be used as county
offices.
