Chesterfield County Public Schools ProfileFamilies continue to make Chesterfield County a "first choice" because of the public school system, named by a national research and relocation firm as among the top school districts in the nation that have "what parents want." More than 55,000 students attend 59 schools and the school division has grown by more than 1,000 students a year for the past three years. Even though its size is large, the school division's focus is on success for each student. High school students may choose to attend the comprehensive high school in their neighborhood or apply to attend a specialty center based on their individual interests and talents. Each comprehensive high school operates at least one specialty center, concentrating on areas ranging from the Humanities, leadership or the arts to pre-engineering or math and science. Regional Governor's Schools and an International Baccalaureate Diploma program are other choices. The Chesterfield Technical Center serves students from every county high school and offers a full range of career and technical courses tailored to current workplace needs. To help make large middle schools more personal, students are organized on teams and share the same teachers who have a mutual planning time. Center-based programs in elementary and middle schools help meet the needs of gifted learners, and an expanding English as a Second Language program reflects the growing diversity in the county. Middle and high school alternative study options are available in both day and night programs. A coordinated studies program offers courses via the Internet. Of the 3,539 graduates in the class of 2004, 59 percent earned advanced studies diplomas and 82 percent planned to further their education. The class earned $13.6 million in scholarships. The school division hires the top five percent of its applicants for teaching positions. Attracting and retaining the best teachers is a division priority, and Chesterfield has 8 National Board Certified Teachers as well as numerous regional, state and national award winning teachers and staff members. The School Board vision for 2012 calls for a public education system that citizens of all ages can "trust in, invest in and benefit from." Residents of the county have supported school bond referendums in overwhelming numbers, more than 4,000 senior residents have come back to school to take a class tuition free through the Adult Education program, and more than 300 business and community partners are recognized annually for their significant contributions to the school division. All of this adds up to a school division where, as its slogan suggests, "successes add up…one student, one employee and one school at a time." For
