General Information

What is a building permit? 

A building permit is the authorization to begin construction, alteration or demolition of any residential, commercial, or industrial structure as required by the Uniform Statewide Building Code, which is state law. The purpose of the permit is to protect people from repair and construction violations that could cause harm to life and property.

Where are applications accepted? 

Applications are accepted at the offices of the Chesterfield County Department of Building Inspection, 9800 Government Center Parkway, Chesterfield, Virginia 23832. Map this The phone number for permit information is (804) 751-4990.

What information or forms do you need to apply for a permit?

Do you have to submit applications in person? 

Applications with all required documentation (as outlined in the “Permit Application Submittal Requirements” section below), may be submitted by faxing legible copies, accompanied by the Credit Card Authorization Form to 804-751-4713. Auxiliary permit applications only may also be submitted by mail with a check to Chesterfield County Department of Building Inspection, P.O. Box 40, Chesterfield, Virginia 23832-0040. Walk-thru permits must be applied for in person.

When are permit applications accepted? 

Excluding holidays, residential permit applications can be applied for in person Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There are special hours for accepting Walk-thru permits. Excluding holidays, residential Walk-thru permit applications are accepted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9-11 a.m. All applications must be submitted in person and are processed in the order received. Appointments are not accepted.

Who may apply for a permit? 

    • Property owner
    • Licensed contractor* 
    • Tenant of a building or a unit
    • Owner’s agent with written permission from the owner

* Contractor Registration: Contractors who have never performed work before in Chesterfield County are required to submit a Client Registration Form, from which an identification number will be created for use in future applications and inspection scheduling.

How long does it take to get a permit? 

It depends on the complexity of the project and the number of times the documents need to be reviewed. If all required documents are approved in the first review, the permit can usually be issued within five business days. Your project may qualify for the Walk-thru Process, allowing you to visit the office and walk away with the permit. Walk-thru Permit criteria
