Rockwood Nature Center is the only county-operated nature center in Chesterfield County. The log cabin-style facility is nestled by the forest in Rockwood Park.

Hours: Friday-Sunday; noon – 5 p.m.

What you can do at Rockwood Park:
Wildlife up close: Rockwood Nature Center houses live snakes, turtles, frogs and occasionally other wildlife species. Kids and parents can look eye-to-eye with a kingsnake, watch honeybees stir in their hive and watch a slider bask on a log.

Rockwood Pond Programs Galore: The nature center offers nature and outdoor programs for all ages. Preschoolers can have their first encounter with wildlife and explore the forest. Adults and families can learn about the snakes of Virginia or hear tales around a campfire. Boy and Girl Scouts can earn badges, and teachers and home-school parents can enlist a naturalist for their nature studies. Archery, orienteering and letterboxing are some of the programs conducted for groups.

Volunteer for Nature: Enjoy the outdoors and people? Then consider becoming a volunteer at Rockwood Nature Center. Volunteers can staff the center and answer questions, help with the live exhibits, assist with programs and help at special events.   Assist the Friends of Rockwood Nature Center as they support the programs and animals at the Nature Center.

Hit the Trail: Rockwood has over five miles of trails that ramble through forest, pond, wetlands and Falling Creek. Trails are suitable for young and old hikers. Some trails are accessible for wheelchairs. A 1.3-mile fitness trail winds through the forest and includes six exercise stations.

Firefly Hike and Campfire

Join us at the Rockwood Nature Center for classic summer fun! Who doesn’t love seeing fireflies on warm summer evenings? Kids will be able to make their own glowing firefly, then we’ll hike through Rockwood Park to look for fireflies. Our naturalists will discuss interesting facts about fireflies such as bioluminescence and their varying light patterns. After our night time foray we’ll head back to the nature center for s'mores and campfire. Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied by a participating adult. $7/person Course 27120
