Dutch Gap Conservation Area and Boat Ramp
The Dutch Gap Conservation Area surrounds Henricus Historical Park and provides 810 acres of diverse woods, wetlands and wildlife. Bordered by the James River, the area includes a blue heron rookery in the marsh. Dutch Gap provides a boat landing to the James River.
The 1611 Citie of Henricus , located in the 32-acre Henricus Historical Park, is the site of the second permanent English settlement in the new world. The Citie, which is being reconstructed, permits visitors to travel back 400 years to witness the life and hardships of those first settlers. Visit the small, timber-framed buildings (made of wattle and daub) that served as homes to the settlers. Witness history come alive as costumed interpreters tend garden, cook, practice domestic and carpentry crafts, play early 17th-century music and protect this important wilderness outpost of English life in the New World.
The park is part of the 842-acre Dutch Gap Conservation Area, which offers many other educational and recreational activities. Henricus Park is in partnership with Henricus Foundation and the counties of Henrico and Chesterfield, with assistance from the City of Richmond.
