Where can I get some assistance with the preparation of my state return?

The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue offers free assistance with the preparation of your state tax return. You will need to bring a completed copy of your Federal Tax return and your W-2's. The office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We assist on a first come first served basis with no appointments.

When can I expect my refund?

The processing time for most returns is 4 to 6 weeks. Although, if your name, address, and filing status is the same as the previous year, you may request an Accelerated Refund by marking the block on your return. If your request is accepted, you may receive your refund in a week to ten days. You may check the status of your return by checking the website of www.tax.virginia.gov.

As required by the 2012-2014 Appropriations Act, there will be two refund options offered on individual income tax returns. Refunds will be issued by direct deposit to a checking or savings account or on a prepaid debit card, the Virginia Tax Refund Debit Card. The debit card replaces paper refund checks for those filers who do not choose the direct deposit option for their refunds. Filers must specify which option they prefer on their income tax returns as well as provide a date of birth. There is no option for requesting a paper check. Additional information can be found at www.tax.virginia.gov/site.cfm?alias=refunddebitcards

Why is my address wrong, when I corrected it last year on my return?

When correcting your address you need to file a 760CH, stating your name and address as the Department has it now and what is correct as of this date. When filing your return you will need to check the box "Address has changed from last year". Sometimes when processing your return, if you have asked for an accelerated refund, your refund will be mailed to the prior year's address, and therefore, your address will not be changed.
