Community Corrections Services - Drug Court

Drug court is a voluntary, court-based program designed to assist drug-addicted individuals in changing their criminal lifestyle and becoming free from alcohol and other drugs. Defendants who are arrested in Chesterfield County or the City of Colonial Heights and meet all of the eligibility criteria may choose to enter the drug court program instead of proceeding through the traditional court process. While in drug court, participants are required to complete an intensive treatment program under the direction of a team of professionals from the court, treatment, police department and local probation.

The Drug Court program consists of five phases. Participants must meet certain behavior and treatment expectations at each phase before moving to the next phase.

  • Participants are required to attend nine hours of treatment per week through the Community Services Board, participate in two self-help groups each week, submit to drug testing a minimum of three times per week and appear before the Drug Court Judge each Wednesday. Treatment and supervision requirements decrease in intensity as the participant progresses through the phases.
  • The Drug Court Police Officer and the Local Probation Officers conduct home visits on a frequent basis to ensure that participants are complying with program requirements in the community.
  • Individuals who complete the drug court program have their felony drug charge dismissed at the end of the program.
  • Participants who fail the program are incarcerated for a minimum of six months on each charge.
