License Inspector Frequently Asked Questions

My vehicle is registered; my state plates are still current. Why did I get this?

Because of the similarity in name, the Chesterfield County Vehicle Registration is often confused with the vehicle’s state registration. The county vehicle registration is not connected with your state plates; it is issued by the Treasurer of Chesterfield County, not DMV. See a detailed description of the county registration.

What is a Chesterfield County Vehicle Registration?

This is a registration required for all vehicles/trailers that are principally housed parked or garaged in Chesterfield County.  See a detailed description of the county registration.

What to do if you have received a Citation or registration notice?

To comply with the citation or notice you must obtain your county registration.  See step by step instructions on compliance .

Is there fee for this citation?

There is no additional fee for receiving the citation; it can be complied without penalty as soon as the registration is issued by the Treasurer of Chesterfield County.

I received a letter regarding a court date; can I avoid court?

It is possible to avoid appearing in court by obtaining a valid registration and presenting evidence of this to the License Inspector within the time frame indicated on the summons letter. Please contact the Department of License Inspection at 748-1229 or the inspector that issued the summons for further information. See instructions on how to obtain the registration.

Do I have to go to court if I obtain the registration?

It is possible to avoid appearing in court by obtaining a valid registration and presenting evidence of this to the License Inspector within the time frame indicated on the summons letter. Please contact the Department of License Inspection at 748-1229 or the inspector that issued the summons for further information. See instructions on how to obtain the registration.

What if I cannot obtain my registration before the court date?

Call and speak to the issuing inspector promptly. Last minute requests cannot be honored.  Get contact information.

I got a summons to appear in court. What happens if I don’t get the county registration?

Failing to obtain a valid county vehicle registration is considered a Class 4 misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine up to $250 plus any court costs. Each day the vehicle is not in compliance is considered a separate violation and can be charged separately.

The Treasurer’s website says I need a tax bill to pay online or over the phone. I don’t have one so what do I do?

Contact the Treasurer by phone.

I don’t own this vehicle anymore; what do I do?

If you have disposed of the vehicle in question, you must report this to DMV and the Chesterfield County Commissioner of the Revenue.  See vehicle disposal reporting instructions.  After review by the Commissioner, you may still be required to obtain a registration for the vehicle for the year in question.

I’ve moved out of Chesterfield; what do I do?

If you have moved out of Chesterfield County, you must report this to DMV and the Chesterfield County Commissioner of the Revenue.

After review by the Commissioner, you may still be required to obtain a registration for the vehicle for the year in question.

What to do if you are active duty military

If you are in an active duty status and your home of record is outside of the Commonwealth of Virginia, obtain a copy a copy of your Leave and Earnings Statement and contact the Commissioner of the Revenue for Chesterfield County.
