How to Update Your Voter Registration

For Existing Virginia Voters Only

There are several ways for you to update your record.

  • Appear in the Office of the General Registrar at 9848 Lori Road (23832)
  • Complete the change of address form on the back of your voter registration card
  • Download Virginia Voter Registration Form, or, if you are military or overseas, download a Federal Post Card Application
  • Send a letter stating your full name, last four digits of your social security number, Date of Birth, new and old addresses, and signature.

Regardless on which method you choose your signature must be provided.

The update can be submitted by:

  • Mail - General Registrar, PO Box 1690, Chesterfield, VA  23832-1690
  • Fax - (804) 751-0822; or
  • Email – registrar@chesterfield.gov (Scan the completed and signed application, then email).

Once submitted, you WILL receive a reply - either a denial or a voter registration card.  If you do not receive any response within 2 weeks, contact the Office of the General Registrar. Denials are usually the result of providing incomplete information. When using the Voter Registration Form please be sure to answer EVERY question and sign the application.

The final day to update your voter registration to vote in a general or primary election is on the 22nd day prior to the election. (The registration books are closed during the 21 days preceding a general or primary election.) Those persons who have not updated their registration by that deadline may be ineligible to vote in upcoming elections.
