"Getting to Know Your Young Child " -- This class is for parents who want to learn more about the basic needs of young children from newborns to preschoolers.  Topics to be discussed will include learning through play, handling challenging behaviors, child development and how to parent a secure and confident child.

" Coping with Your Child's Behavior:  The Pre-school Years " -- a course for parents that teaches practical ways to deal with the challenging behaviors of early childhood.

"Parenting Your Young Adolescent: The Jekyll and Hyde Years " -- This is an evening course for parents of early adolescents aged 10-15.  Development, effective communication, relationship enhancement, conflict reduction and behavior management will be emphasized.

"The Business of Co-parenting" -- This class is designed for parents who no longer live together but are looking for ways to communicate about the children with less conflict and tension. Both parents must attend the class.

"ADHD: A Parent's Tool Kit "-- This course for parents or caregivers of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, offers participants tools to help in raising a child with ADHD.  Topics will include talking to children about ADHD, helping children develop positive behaviors and decrease negative behaviors, teaching children to manage their feelings, and supporting children in being successful at school.  Participants will have the opportunity to talk with other parents about common concerns in an informal atmosphere.

"Families First" -- This is a home visitation program for first-time parents.

School Programs

Prevention Services provides many programs to the children and staff of Chesterfield schools.  Training is offered to school personnel who run groups for children whose parents are divorced and children who have difficulty expressing angry feelings appropriately.  Inservice training for teachers and other school personnel is routinely provided on a variety of mental health topics.  Prevention Services works closely with second and third grade teachers on a program that teaches youngsters how to solve problems between people.

Adult Programs

  • " For Better or For Worse " -- a course that teaches couples how to communicate what you want out of your relationship, how to resolve conflict effectively and reduce arguments, how to solve problems as a team, and how to keep fun, friendship and intimacy a part of your relationship.  The class will be held for seven consecutive weekly evenings.  Contact:  Robin Jones, M.S. or Karl Kalber, M.S. at 768-7800 (preregistration is required).
