The following links provide general information on residential growth in Chesterfield County. More detailed information can be found in the Chesterfield County Residential Development Report.

Single Family Housing Built in Chesterfield from 2003 to 2007 (PDF, 3,999kb) This map shows one dot for each house built in the last five years.

Each year the Planning Department provides population estimates and housing counts for each of the county’s 25 communities, and makes population and housing unit projections.

Residential Building Permits from 1975 to 2007 for Chesterfield (PDF,14kb) This graph shows the considerable annual variation in building permit activity over a 30 year period, and includes annual counts for both single-family and multi-family housing.

The Plan For Chesterfield, the county's comprehensive plan, recognizes orderly development as a critical element in managing the county’s growth. The county's development strategy directs growth into appropriate locations, either within Infill areas, where there is existing development, or the Planned Growth Area, which is just beyond the Infill Area. A third part of the county is designated for Deferred Growth, where significant development is recommended to be deferred.
