Department of Building Inspection

Citizens Assistance Program

The Chesterfield County Department of Building Inspections has a telephone help line called the Citizens Assistance Program (CAP) to assist citizens who have concerns with building code violations or property maintenance issues on their own property or on any other property in Chesterfield County.

When a citizen calls the CAP, a Citizen Assistance Coordinator will try to determine over the phone whether a code violation may exist. If there is a probable violation, the Coordinator may send an inspector out to investigate.

If there is a violation, the responsible party will be contacted to have the code violations corrected.  If the violation is not corrected, the department will issue a Notice of Violation, which gives the responsible party a reasonable amount of time to correct the violation.  If there is no response to the Notice of Violation, legal action may be taken.

Additional information you should know:

  1. Cosmetic issues such as paint, shingles, etc. are not code issues.
  2. For property line and setback issues, the Coordinator will refer you to the Planning Department at 748-1050.
  3. If you are renting a house or apartment, as a tenant, you may ask for resolution of any maintenance related issue, which makes the house or apartment unsafe.

The Citizen Assistance Coordinators can be reached by calling (804) 748-1779
