Report on the 1996 Bond Referendum Projects

Overview of the Referendum

In November 1996, Chesterfield County citizens overwhelmingly supported through their votes the county's issuance of $228.4 million in bonds for capital improvements in the areas of Schools, Public Safety, Libraries, and Parks and Recreation. The county sold the last increment of bonds in 2002 as planned. More

Schools

More than 50,000 students, or one-fifth of Chesterfield County's population, attend its 59 public schools. Chesterfield is among the 100 largest school districts in the nation, offering a full range of services to meet the needs of all students. More

Public Safety

Bond funding, supplemented with general fund revenues, has allowed the county to deliver public safety projects. While some projects are completed, others are underway in various phases of progress. In addition, the Courthouse Fire Station #20 project was funded with the adoption of the FY2002 budget and construction will begin this fall. More

Libraries

Voter support of the 1996 referendum positioned the county to improve on its mission. Bond funding, supplemented with general fund revenues, has allowed the county to deliver two new libraries and a new information system. More

Parks and Recreation

Bond funding, supplemented with general fund revenues, has allowed the county to undertake new projects that will add soccer, baseball and softball fields, picnic areas, playgrounds, trails, a boat launch and restrooms, improve recreation facilities at schools, renovate a pier and install lighting.
