Millard
D. "Pete" Stith, Jr., is a deputy county administrator for
Chesterfield County. He has served in that position since 1992 and
is responsible for the county's Community Development programs, overseeing
more than $68 million of the county's budget. Chesterfield provides
innovative and comprehensive services for 299,000 residents. The county
was named eighth on a list of America's 20 "hottest white collar
addresses in the nation"
by the Wall Street Journal and sixth in the "up and
coming" communities by City & State magazine.
It recently received the U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award.
Stith received a bachelor of science degree in political science and
public administration from Norfolk State University and attended law school
at the College of William and Mary. He served five years in the Marines
and received the American Spirit of Honor Medal.
He joined Chesterfield County in 1984 as executive assistant to the county
administrator and also has served as director of Parks and Recreation.
He previously held gubernatorial appointments as senior vice president
of Jobs for Virginia Graduates, Inc., and state director of housing. He
also was executive director of Charles City Community Action Agency and
a gubernatorial intern. He has served every governor since Linwood Holton.
Stith's areas of responsibility as deputy county administrator for Chesterfield
County include Building Inspection, Economic Development, Environmental
Engineering, Planning, Community Development Block Grant Program, Office
of the Ombudsman, Transportation, Revitalization and Utilities. As deputy administrator,
he led the effort to develop the county's Black History Month program
and establish the fast-track development review process. More recently,
he posted commercial site plans on the Internet.
He is active in civic and community organizations. He is a member of
Leadership Metro Richmond, Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine, North
Carolina State University Board of Regents, Midlothian Rotary and Chesterfield
Business Council. He was named by Style Weekly as one of the Ten
People Making Life Better South of the James in 1989. He is an honorary
Kentucky Colonel.
He served as rector of Virginia State University in 1996-97, having been
appointed by Gov. George Allen to the Board of Visitors in 1995. He is
a participating member of the NAACP Life Membership program and recipient
of numerous awards and citations for his community work.
