Durfee, Chesterfield County Board of SupervisorsCounty high schools and the Police Department are presenting driving programs called “Come Home Alive” this fall for parents and teens. The Manchester program will be held on Nov. 1 and the Matoaca program on Nov. 8. Both begin at 7 p.m. Discussions will include driver-education curriculum, traffic laws governing teens, car insurance, safety reminders and coaching tips for parents. In October, U.S. News & World Report announced its first ranking of 81 historically black colleges and universities in the U.S. Virginia State University was listed as the top public institution among master's-level institutions, the fifth best overall, and 15th best of public or private schools. This year, VSU graduated its first doctoral students, first nursing students and the first students in two new master's programs. A project to construct a sidewalk along Halloway Avenue from Matoaca Middle School to Hickory Road is under way and should be completed in November. The trail has been completed at Lake Chesdin Park. Phase II, which will include parking and picnic areas, will begin construction this winter. A new park entrance, parking lot and football field improvements are under way at Matoaca Park and will be completed early this spring. Sight-distance and shoulder improvements are planned for Genito Road, and construction will begin this spring. The new athletic area at the Spring Run Athletic Complex is under construction and will be completed this spring.
