In an attempt to make your adoption experience as timely and efficient as possible, please note the following important information:
Items to bring with you when you come to the shelter:
- Current Virginia driver’s license or picture identification with current address.
- Check or cash. The Animal Shelter does not accept debit or credit cards at this time.
The Animal Shelter is open for adoptions during the following hours:
- Monday through Friday: 10:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
- Saturday: Noon - 4 p.m.
- Sunday: Closed
All dogs and cats will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Each dog or cat will have undergone the following procedures at the adoption:
- Spayed or neutered
- Rabies shot for adult dogs or cats
- Age appropriate preventative vaccination for puppies or kittens.
At the time of adoption, all new dog owners will be required to purchase a Chesterfield County dog license.
- Fee for dog license for a spayed or neutered dog is $5.

Adoption Program for Senior Citizens
The Animal Shelter offers an exciting reduced fee adoption program for senior citizens. This special program offers seniors a wonderful opportunity to adopt a homeless companion animal that is already spay or neutered. The adoption fee is $10 for dogs and cats. Senior citizens must be 62 years of age and produce a valid identification. Come to the shelter, visit with our homeless dogs and cats, and find a new friend.
Incentive Program for Adoptable Dogs or Cats with Special Needs
The Animal Shelter offers an exciting reduced fee adoption program for dogs and cats with special needs. While these dogs and cats may have special needs due to age or treatable health issues they make wonderful pets. The Animal Shelter will reduce your adoption fee by the cost of the sterilization. The adoption fee for dogs and cats in this program is $10 dollars. This is a wonderful way of giving these animals a second chance and gaining a new friend.
