Adopt a Pet

Items to bring with you when you come to the shelter:

  • A current Virginia driver’s license or picture identification with current address.
  • Check or cash. The Animal Shelter does not accept debit or credit cards.

All dogs and cats will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Each dog or cat will have undergone the following procedures before adoption:

  • Spaying/neutering
  • Rabies vaccine for dogs and cats over 4 months of age
  • Age-appropriate preventative vaccinations
  • FELV/FIV testing for cats
  • Microchips for dogs

Adoption Fees

The $60 adoption fee covers:

  • Spaying or neutering the animal
  • Age-appropriate vaccines for the animal
  • Administrative adoption costs


At the time of adoption, all new dog owners will be required to purchase a Chesterfield County dog license. The fee for a dog license for a spayed/neutered dog is $5.

Adoption Program for Seniors

People who are 62 years of age or older can adopt dogs or cats for a reduced fee of $10. Program participants must produce valid identification.

Adoption Program for Pets with Special Needs

Dogs and cats that have special needs due to age or treatable health issues can be adopted for a reduced fee of $10.
