Providing a First Choice Community Through Excellence in Public Service

Success Through Education and Proactive Policing (STEPP)

STEPP

The Chesterfield County Police Department has adopted the concept of community policing as it’s performance model. Community policing promotes the development of partnerships between law enforcement, citizens and the business community. By resolving these problems in the community, the quality of life is improved for all citizens.

Success Through Education and Proactive Policing is an educational program for Chesterfield County elementary schools. This program is a collaborative effort between the Chesterfield County Police Department and Chesterfield County Public Schools. The program is taught by non-sworn, uniformed child safety officers in all 38 county public elementary schools. Course topics are based on school grade. Child Safety officers interact with more than 25,000 elementary school-aged children by going into the classroom and building positive relationship between students and the Chesterfield County Police Department. Topics and lessons include respect, stranger awareness, safety at home, peer pressure, decision making, school bus, pedestrian, seat belt and bike safety lessons, crime prevention and numerous drug and alcohol awareness classes.

Fore more information about the STEPP program, please contact the Child Safety Office in the Support Services Division at (804) 318-8698.
