Chesterfield Police 2006 Annual ReportOffice of the Chief of PoliceDear Chesterfield County resident, 2006 was both a year of achievement as well as sorrow for the Chesterfield County Police Department. The department and community grieved over the death of Officer Gary J. Buro. We drew on the strength of the Buro family during an increasingly difficult time. Gary and his family will always be a part of our law-enforcement community. The department celebrated a number of successes to include the addition of the Hull Street station, the county’s third district police station. The Woodlake Commons Loop facility is a temporary site pending selection and construction of a permanent station. The need for a third station speaks to the increasing growth in western Chesterfield County. We remain committed to traffic safety. New enforcement initiatives generated public awareness and educated all drivers. Two major initiatives focused on reducing motor vehicle crashes and driving under the influence crashes. Those efforts resulted in a 54.5 percent decrease in DUI traffic deaths, 42.9 percent decrease in speed-related traffic deaths, and an overall decrease in fatal crashes. Our efforts in traffic safety and enforcement also resulted in a 2006 second place win in the Virginia Law Enforcement Challenge, a traffic safety competition sponsored by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police. Our use of technology continues to expand through the introduction of a new major software technology for criminal analysis. We are well on our way to a true regional and statewide shared information system. All our accomplishments over the years are a result of the collective knowledge and dedication of this entire police department-both sworn and civilian employees. I am proud to have served the residents of Chesterfield County for the last 11 years and even more proud to have worked with such an outstanding group of police professionals. May the future bring continued success to Chesterfield County and to all of you. Sincerely,
