Physical Fitness Requirements

BMI Chart

Chesterfield Fire and Emergency Medical Services requires all newly hired firefighters to meet certain physical fitness requirements and to meet those requirements so long as they remain with the Department.  Body Mass Index or BMI is a tool used for indicating weight status in adults since  BMI correlates height and weight data to amount of body fat .  Chesterfield Fire and EMS uses the BMI chart as a guideline during pre-employment physicals to determine if the prospective employee is physically fit to perform the job of firefighter.  A BMI of a 30 is the guideline used as indicative of a physically fit applicant , but a candidate’s BMI may exceed 30 if he/she has a high muscle mass or  if the medical professional selected by the Department makes a medical determination that neither the health nor performance as a firefighter will be adversely affected by the applicant’s weight . The BMI is not an absolute barrier to employment.
