Emergency Communications Officers are the first responders, whose actions and quick thinking can have a positive impact on a serious situation. This position will provide you the opportunity to assist citizens when they are faced with situations that require fire, police or EMS responses. This intriguing career field requires a person who can take fragmentary information, assess the needs and dispatch appropriate personnel and equipment within seconds in response to a request for service or assistance. We will train you
The Department of Criminal Justice Services mandates newly hired employees to attend a Basic Dispatcher School and Emergency Medical Dispatch class. You will be paid during attendance at these classes, however it is up to you to successfully complete each class. We have established training days to keep you up to date with the latest technology, policies and procedures. County requirements for certifications in CPR, VCIN and First Responder are provided for you. We provide on the job training to give you the working knowledge required to perform the duties of an Emergency Communications Officer.
Qualifications
- Pursuant to requirements of the Virginia Criminal Information Network, all persons selected for employment must be a U.S. citizen or have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past ten consecutive years.
- High school graduate or GED.
- 18 years of age by hiring date.
- Two years of continuous, stable employment (part-time employment would be considered).
- Evaluation of typing (minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute preferred).
- Must be available to work any permanent shift assigned.
- Submit to and pass an extensive background investigation and polygraph.
- Pass a pre-employment drug test.
- Pass pre-employment test which includes job compatibility assessment tools.
- Vision abilities required including close vision and ability to adjust focus, ability to hear and readily relay information accurately.
- Must possess good customer service skills, and have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and to make fast decisions.
- Knowledgeable with computers.
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
Work requirements
- Ability to report to work on time.
- Ability to work various shifts.
- Ability to work weekends and holidays.
- Ability to work mandatory overtime.
- Ability to sit and work at computers for extended periods of time.
Background disqualifiers
- Poor work history.
- History of drug use to include Felony use, use of marijuana in the last 2 years, or prolonged use at any time.
- Criminal History to include any Felony Conviction.
- Poor Credit history.
- DUI within the last 5 years.
