Animal ControlAnimal ShelterThe shelter is now a sub-station for selling licenses.Located at 9300 Public Works Road, behind the Courthouse and across from O. B. Gates Elementary School, is the county's newly expanded "state-of-the-art" animal shelter. With the ability to house up to 250 homeless pets at a time, the county aggressively pursues adoption of these pets to new permanent homes. It is estimated that the county saves over 1500 lives a year by pursuing adoption as an alternative to euthanasia. While at the shelter, these animals are provided with necessary medical care. This is made possible by the county's "partnership" with the Chesterfield County Humane Society, which provides funding for medical care, special shelter needs, and volunteers to assist the county staff. One of the most unique operational policies of the Animal Shelter is the policy of NOT destroying puppies born in the shelter at birth. However, in order for them to survive, the moms and pups need to be placed in temporary "safe homes" to be raised until they reach the age of 7 weeks. If you would be interested in volunteering your time to save these little lives, please call (804)717-6236 for more information. Fees for adoption vary by species and reproductive capability, with the maximum fee being $40 with $30 applied to the mandatory spay or neuter procedure. What Happens if your dog is Impounded? If a dog does not have any identification, it will be kept for five days. If it has not been claimed at the end of five days, the animal may be placed for adoption or disposed of. If the dog has identification, it will be kept for ten days. If an owner is known, the owner will be notified by certified mail prior to disposal. Owners will be charged $30 for the first day of confinement and $12 for each succeeding day. The shelter hours for the public are:Monday - Friday 10:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Telephone:(804)748-1684
