Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation is proud to offer Inclusion services. It is the policy of the Department of Parks and Recreation to provide leisure opportunities and recreation programs which are open and accessible to all citizens in the county. We invite individuals with disabilities to take part in any course listed in the department brochure.
To ensure an individual’s success in a program, staff known as Inclusion Coaches will be available to provide assistance. The Therapeutic Recreation staff offer assistance based on reasonable accommodations, which are determined on a case-by-case basis. We ask that an inclusion coach be requested at least three weeks prior to the start of a summer camp or program.
What is Inclusion?
Inclusion is the invitation for individuals with disabilities to participate in any of our leisure and recreation programs.
What are the benefits of Inclusion?
- Pro-social Modeled Behaviors
- Increased Independence
- Sense of Belonging
- Making Friends
- Learning New Skills
- Expanding Creativity
What is the Inclusion process?
After choosing a program, assistance can be requested by indicating the need during registration or through a phone call to the Therapeutic Recreation section. The department asks for at least three weeks notice prior to the program start date to make reasonable accommodations. After the initial request there are two more steps:
- A Participant Profile and Essential Eligibility Requirements (if applicable) are mailed to the participant to be completed and returned. The Participant Profile is an informal assessment of the participant’s abilities that is only shared with the Therapeutic Recreation Department staff and the Inclusion Coach. The Coach can then be prepared to assist where needed to make the specified activity a beneficial experience.
- The Therapeutic Recreation section will facilitate communication between the Inclusion Coach and the parent/participant before the program begins. The role of the Inclusion Coach will be explained to the class instructor to ensure a smooth interaction. All that’s left is attending the program and having a great time!
What programs are available?
We invite individuals with disabilities to take part in any course listed in the department Program Guide. The Therapeutic Recreation staff offer assistance based on reasonable accommodations, which are determined on a case-by-case basis. If you find a program of interest, please contact the Therapeutic Recreation staff.
What are Essential Eligibility Requirements?
Essential eligibility requirements are created to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for individuals both with and without disabilities. The requirements outline general prerequisite skills regarding safety, behaviors, and medical issues. If there are essential eligibility requirements for a program, they will be mailed out with the Participant Profile. If an individual cannot meet the all the Essential Eligibility Requirements, the Therapeutic Recreation office would gladly help in finding a more suitable program.
