Circuit Court ClerkRecords Research Requests
General InformationThe Circuit Court Record Room houses hard copy, microfilm, and/or digital images of all land instruments. Permanent land and court records are available from 1749 (the year of the County's inception) to the present. The Record Room is open to the public from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. An automated index retrieval system is available for public use. Paper indexes for all land records are also available. Title Searches/Recording InformationClerk's Office personnel are available to assist patrons in utilizing all resources in the Record Room. Please note, however, that Clerk's Office personnel are prohibited by law from giving legal advice and are unable to perform title searches. Should you require a title search or legal advice, you are encouraged to contact an attorney or title insurance company, or both. Recording information pertaining to land transactions, judgments, financing statements, etc. is not provided via telephone or e-mail. Customers in need of this information are encouraged to either visit the office or send a written request for copies as described below. Copies of Public Records/Obtaining Recording InformationCopies of public records are available for $.50/page. A certified copy is available for an additional $2.00. Please note that copy fees must be collected in advance. Written requests for copies are accepted, provided payment is enclosed. To confirm the length of a document, please contact the Circuit Court Clerk's Office for assistance. When sending in a written request for copies, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope as well as all applicable details regarding the document(s) to be copied (e.g., grantor/grantee names, type of document, recordation date, book and page number, if available, etc.). Payment may be made by cash, check or money order (payable to the Chesterfield Circuit Court Clerk). Debit and credit cards are not accepted for the payment of copy fees. Additional Information/ResourcesThe Library of Virginia maintains various Chesterfield County records that may be of interest to genealogists and historians.
