A

Adoption.  The legal process that establishes the relationship of parent and child between persons who are not related by birth, providing the same mutual rights and obligations that exist between children and their birth parents, including custody, control, care, support, education and inheritance.

Advocacy. Services or activities designed to promote an issue or cause.  Activities may include education and awareness and/or may be directed toward influencing changes in laws, policies, programs

Alcohol Issues/Services.  Resources to assist individuals and families who have concerns with alcohol use and/or abuse.

Assessments – Educational.  A structured process designed to assist in identifying and evaluating an individual’s educational needs.

Assessments – Mental Health.  A structured process designed to assist in identifying and evaluating an individual’s emotional and/or psychological issues.

Assessments – Substance Abuse.  A structured process designed to assist in identifying and evaluating the extent and/or severity of an individual’s substance use or abuse.

Assessments – Vocational.  A structured process designed to assist individuals in identifying vocational aptitudes and/or interests.

Babysitting Classes.  Classes designed to help teens learn the skills necessary to provide appropriate care for younger children.

Behavior Issues – see Mental Health Services/Behavioral Issues.

Camps.  Programs that have a youth focus and include activities such as sports, field trips, arts and crafts and/or may include special interest activities.

Career Counseling.  Services provided to assist individuals in identifying and in developing a plan to achieve their career goals.

Camps – Bereavement. Camps for youths who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or primary caregiver.

Camps – Sports. Camps designed to enhance youth participation in sports.

Child Abuse/Neglect.  Services provided for youths who may be victims of abuse and neglect and/or their families.

Child Care – see Day Care.

Child Protective Services.  Services provided for youth who may be victims of abuse and/or neglect or their families. These services are usually provided through the Department of Social Services and may or may not involve the courts.

Community Development.  Activities and services that are community focused and designed to strengthen neighborhoods and empower the community through the involvement of citizens (e.g. resident councils, neighborhood associations).

Community Programs. Activities and services that are community focused and designed to benefit a neighborhood or the larger community.

Community Service.  Volunteer activities conducted as a service to benefit others without the expectation of monetary compensation.

Counseling.  Any type of counseling with a youth or family focus.  May include counseling such as guidance counseling related to academic issues or may include services related to treatment of mental health issues.

Counseling – In Home.  Intensive family focused counseling services offered in the home of the customer.

Counseling – Individual/Family/Group.  Treatment services for youths and/or families that focused on identifying and resolving behavioral, emotional or relationship issues.

Counseling – Sex Offender.  Treatment services specifically designed for individuals who have demonstrated sexually assaultive behaviors.

Court Related Services.  Services related to involvement with the court system – primarily through the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court - through court proceedings and/or through juvenile probation services.

Crime Prevention.  Activities and services designed to deter crime.  May include activities such as educational opportunities, public awareness campaigns or neighborhood watch programs.

Crisis Intervention.  Services designed to respond to an emergency situation.

D

Day Care.  Supervised childcare provided by a caretaker who is not a parent or guardian.  Depending on the provider, services may be before and after school or all day.

Disabilities - Physical/Learning.  Services that address physical and/or mental impairments.

Domestic Violence.  A pattern of abusive behaviors used by one individual intended to exert power and control over another individual in the context of an intimate relationship.

Driving Safety.  Services related to driver education and/or improvement of driving skills.

Drugs – see Substance Abuse Issues or Alcohol Issues.

Education – Academic.  Programs and/or classes that provide instruction in academic skills (e.g. reading, writing and math).

Education – Other.  Programs and/or classes that provide instruction in a broad range of special interest areas.

Education – Parenting.  Programs and/or classes designed to assist parents in learning and/or improving appropriate, effective parenting skills.

Education – Pre-School.  Educational programs for children who are not of school age.

Education - Special.  Academic resources and services for young people who have special educational needs.

Employment/Training Services.  Assistance with job search, job counseling, resume development or other services related to obtaining employment.

Enrichment Programs.  Programs that provide opportunities for learning more in depth about topics that are of personal interest or practicing skills that have been learned.  These services may include cultural experiences, music programs or arts programs, for example.

Equipment/Facility - Lending/Rental.  Resources for obtaining special needs equipment and/or supplies at a reduced or at no cost.

Family Planning – see Health Services – Family Planning.

Financial Assistance.  Support provided in the form of cash, reduced fees services or provision of necessities (e.g. food).

Financial Management.  Programs and/or resources that assist individuals in managing their money - such as developing a budget, savings strategies, etc.

Foster Care. Services for youth who may be temporarily or permanently living outside the home of their biological family.

Health Education – First Aid.  Classes that provide instruction in dealing with emergency health issues.

Health Education – General.  Information and/or presentations that may include a variety of health related topics or issues.

Health Education – HIV/AIDS.  Information and/or presentations regarding HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Health Education – Nutrition.  Information and/or presentations on adopting healthy eating habits.

Health Education – Prevention.  Information and/or presentations that approach health issues from the perspective of strategies and activities that individuals can implement to prevent health problems.

Health Education – Sex Education.  Information and presentations that provide instruction in reproductive health.  May include abstinence and family planning issues.

Health Services – Asthma.  Information and resources for individuals who have asthma.

Health Services – Birth Defects.  Information and resources for individuals and families of individuals who have birth defects.

Health Services – Dental.  Prevention and/or medical services associated with teeth and gums.

Health Services – Eating Disorders.  Services for individuals who may have disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, over eating disorders, etc.

Health Services – Family Planning.  Services that assist individuals in making decisions and choices regarding abstinence, sexual activity and pregnancy issues.

Health Services – Hearing Impaired Services designed to assist individuals by identifying potential problems associated with hearing loss.

Health Services – Home Health Care.  Health services provided to individuals in their homes.

Health Services – Immunizations.  Preventive programs that provide individuals an opportunity to receive immunizations for a variety of diseases.

Health Services – Lead Screening.  Services to determine the presence of lead in living areas and/or an individual’s exposure to lead and referral to services as appropriate.

Health Services – Medical. Services performed by a physician, nurse or other trained medical personnel.

Health Services – Occupational Therapy.  Treatment services that are performed by means of an activity that is prescribed for its effect in promoting recovery and/or rehabilitation.

Health Services – Physical Therapy.  The treatment of a disease by physical and mechanical means such as massage, exercise, heat, etc.

Health Services – Prenatal.  Services to assist individuals who are pregnant in managing a healthy pregnancy and producing a healthy baby.

Health Services – Rehabilitative.  Services to assist individuals experiencing a disability in improving and/or restoring function.

Health Services – Smoking Cessation.  Services designed to assist individuals who wish to stop smoking.

Health Services – Speech.  Services designed to identify and assist individuals who may have speech impairments.

Health Services – Vision.  Services designed to assist individuals by identifying potential problems associated with eyesight.

Helpline/Hotline.  A telephone resource for individuals who are seeking quick response to an issue or concern.  Frequently the numbers serve a broad area and the numbers are toll free.

Home Visitation.  Services provided for individuals and/or families where the service provider works with the customer in his or her home.

I

Immigration/Refugee ServicesServices to assist individuals who are not currently citizens of the United States.

Information and Referrals.  Services include guiding and connecting individuals who are seeking Information and/or resources to the appropriate organization.

Interpreter/Translator Services.  Services to assist individuals who are not able to communicate by speaking English.

Leadership ProgramsOpportunities for young people to learn, develop and practice skills that enhance their ability to play leadership roles in their schools, faith organizations and the community.

Learning Disabilities.  A disorder that interferes with the learning of academic skills.

Legal/Law Issues.  Services that assist individuals with legal needs or concerns.

Life Skills/Independent Living.  Programs that provide opportunities for young people to learn and practice basic skills.  Skills learned may include but are not limited to goal setting, decision making, communication and social skills.

Medical Services – see Health Services - Medical.

Mental Health Services/Behavioral Issues.  A wide variety of services that have been designed to assist young people and their families in addressing behavioral and/or emotional issues.

Mental Retardation Services.  Services that address the needs of youths and/or the families of youths who have cognitive/intellectual limitations.

Mentoring.  A structured, supervised one on one relationship between a responsible adult and a young person.

Money Management – see Financial Management.

Museums. Facilities devoted to obtaining, studying, displaying collections of objects/items of lasting interest or value to the community.

Outdoor programsPrograms that offer young people the opportunity to learn and/or participate in recreational activities in an outdoor environment.  Some programs may include a treatment focus.

Parent Education – see Education – Parenting.

Pre-School Programs – see Education – Pre-School.

Prevention.   Activities or services that create and reinforce conditions that promote safe, healthy behaviors and lifestyles. Activities and services are proactive and may focus on a variety of areas, including, but not limited to, positive youth development, avoidance of involvement in risky behaviors, strengthening families, and reducing child abuse and neglect.

Psychiatric Services – In/Out Patient.  Mental health services offered by a licensed medical doctor.

Rape Crisis – see Crisis Intervention or Sexual Assault.

Recreation Programs – General.  Leisure programs and resources where young people participate in a supervised environment.

Recreation Programs – Therapeutic.  Structured leisure programs and activities designed to help young people improve their quality of life – physically, mentally, emotionally and socially.  Often programs are designed for specific populations (e.g. young offenders, young people with disabilities).

Residential Services.  May include any type of assistance with locating or securing housing programs and/or services, including emergency shelter.

Resource Center.  A physical location where the public may go to access information and resource materials.

Respite Care. Programs or services that offer the opportunity for care givers to “take a break” with the assurance that the needs of the individual in their care are being met. Services may be provided in or outside of the home.

Runaways.  Services for young people who are under 18 years of age and have left the home of their parent(s) or legal guardian(s).

Sexual Assault.  Services designed to assist individuals who have been an involuntary participant in sexual activity.

Shelters.  Emergency housing resources for young people who are not able to live in their own home.

Sports. This category includes all team sports, individual sports and games.  Most sports are also categorized according to the type of activity involved.

Sports – Baseball/Softball.  Programs for individuals who wish to join a baseball or softball team.

Sports – Basketball. Programs for individuals who wish to participate join a basketball team.

Sports – Cheerleading. Programs for individuals who wish to participate join a cheerleading squad.

Sports – Field Hockey/Lacrosse. Programs for individuals who wish to join a field hockey/lacrosse team.

Sports – Football. Programs for individuals who wish to participate join a football team.

Sports – Golf. Programs for individuals who wish to learn to play golf.

Sports – Soccer. Programs for individuals who wish to participate join a soccer team.

Sports – Wrestling. Programs for individuals who wish to participate join a wrestling team.

Substance Abuse Issues/Services.  Provision of substance abuse prevention, education and/or treatment services.

Support Groups – Alcohol/Drugs.  A group of individuals who have experienced problems with alcohol/drugs and or family members of those individuals, who come together in a structured setting to provide mutual support and assistance in dealing with concerns relating to the alcohol/drug abuse.

Support Groups – Disabilities/ Health.  A group of individuals who have experienced similar health and/or disability issues and/or family members of those individuals, who come together in a structured setting to provide mutual support and assistance in dealing with concerns relating to the disability and/or health issue.

Support Groups – Other.  A group of individuals with similar issues and/or concerns that come together in a structured setting to provide mutual support and assistance with concerns.

Support Groups – Parenting.  Typically groups of parents who are experiencing similar issues or concerns with their children, who come together in a structured setting to provide mutual support and assistance with concerns.

Support Groups – Smoking Cessation.  Groups of individuals who have quit or are in the process of quitting smoking who come together in a structured setting to provide mutual support and assistance in dealing with concerns.

Teen Centers.  Supervised locations where teens can go to “hang out” with their friends and/or to participate in organized recreational activities.

Teen Pregnancy.  Information and services for teens who are pregnant.

Transportation.  The organization provides transportation services for participants in their programs and services.

Tutoring.  Educational assistance provided beyond regular classroom instruction.

Vocational Services.  Services and programs that teach young people skills that will enhance their employment opportunities.

Youth Programs.  A broad range of positive activities and services that target a youthful audience.  Programs may include activities such as dances, concerts, coffee houses, recreation, etc.
