Take the puzzle out of quality child care - Find a Program With All
the Pieces!
- Small Group Size: Stop and Count. How many children are in your childs
group? What are their ages?
- Ratio of Adult to Child: Count the number of adults. Are there enough
adults for the number of children?
- Caregiver Behaviors: Are the caregivers actively involved with the
children? Are they down on the floor at the childrens level? Are
they warm, friendly, patient, and seem to enjoy being with children?
- Basic Health & Safety: Do you see: frequent hand washing, toys
and equipment cleaned regularly, area/facility is child proof, and a
staff trained in CPR and First Aid?
- Stability Of Care: High staff turnover interferes with the need for
children to form healthy attachments and trusting relationships.
- Shared Values & Approach to Child-Rearing: Do you agree with how
the caregivers discipline, praise, teach, and handle conflicts between
children?
- Environment: Look and Listen. Do the children look and sound happy?
Are the surroundings bright and cheerful? Is the area/facility clean?
- Appropriate Programming: Are the activities appropriate for your childs
age? Children should participate in activities that are not too easy
or difficult. Activities should encourage children to learn, grow, and
develop.
- Parental Involvement: Is parent involvement and participation encouraged?
Caregivers are your partners in parenting. Develop an open and honest
relationship and STAY INVOLVED!
