Volunteer Program

“Volunteers are an integral part of our team. They contribute their unique talents, skills, and knowledge
enabling us to offer an outstanding quality of programming to our customers.”

The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services provides and promotes volunteer opportunities for ages fourteen and older. To obtain a volunteer application, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at (804) 751-4398.

Volunteer Opportunities are as follows:

Children's Corner Assistant - Supervises registered children in Kid's Corner while parent applies for services. Must genuinely enjoy children and activities such as reading, games, coloring, building blocks, etc. Must possess good communication skills with adults and children. Flexible hours suited to volunteer's schedule - morning and early afternoon.

Clerical Aide - General clerical assistance such as making packets of information, filing, copying, purging files, and shredding confidential documents. The Volunteer must be organized and able to follow directions. Training provided. Flexible hours suited to volunteer's schedule.

Transportation Assistant - Driving either children or adults to medical or counseling appointments. Driving a foster child to visit with his/her biological parent. Volunteer needed during daytime office hours. Time commitment suited to volunteer's schedule. Volunteer must attend a free one-day driving class provided by the county. Volunteers use county cars for transporting.

Mentor For A Child - A mentor's role is that of a caring and attentive adult friend who meets with the child at least two times every month. The mentor serves as a good listener and role model for the child and provides opportunities that are of interest to the child, such as trips to the park, library, or museum. Volunteers must go through background checks. A mentor must be mature and have had experience working with children.

Receptionist -There is an occasional need for a receptionist in our annex and in the main building. Responsibilities include greeting customers and answering the telephone. Hours vary. Must have excellent communication skills.

Spanish Interpreter - Help Spanish speaking customers fill out applications and interpret for benefit interviews. Must be fluent in Spanish.

Tutor - There is an occasional need for tutors for children and adults. Tutoring children may include working with math or reading skills with child. Tutoring adults may include working with a customer trying to pass the DMV driving test or helping customer study for GED exam.

Earned Income Tax Assistant or Greeter - Assistance given during tax season (January - April, one evening a week). Volunteers who assist customers with filing out their tax form must complete tax training and pass an exam. No exam is required of volunteer greeters. Greeters welcome customers and do an initial brief screening.

The Volunteer program also coordinates donations and sponsorship of families in need. Families are sponsored for one year. Sponsors provide holiday and birthday gifts and help with other needs that may arise such as household items or clothing.

Please call the volunteer coordinator at 751-4398 for more information about sponsorship of a family or about any of the following ways to support Chesterfield - Colonial Heights Department of Social Services:

  • Sponsor a child for school supplies or donate money for the annual Tools for School drive
  • Contribute to the summer camp fund to help a child attend summer camp
  • Donate gently used children’s books for the agency waiting room
  • Contribute money or goods for the annual Foster Family Holiday Party
  • Contribute money to Brooks Clements Bike Fund to purchase a bicycle for a child
  • Make Easter baskets for children
