Monster by Walter Dean Myers

Steve Harmon is sixteen years old and on trial as an accomplice to murder. Throughout the trial, his evenings are spent in jail where there is constant yelling, beating, and crying. He constantly struggles to make sense of his life and the path that it has taken. In order to remain sane and organize his thoughts, Steve writes his story in screenplay format. His life feels like a movie and at times, events do not seem real to him. His trial continues as the novel progresses with the verdict reached at the end. Readers who seek novels dealing with serious issues will find this title engrossing and thought-provoking.

Multiple Choice by Janet Tashjian

The Scrabble tiles made her do it! Monica is a perfectionist who constantly obsesses over saying and doing the right thing. In order to stop worrying and to bring some spontaneity into her life, Monica comes up with a game involving scrabble tiles. She associates tiles "A," "B," "C," and "D" with different actions and places them in a bag. After choosing one of these tiles from the bag, she has to perform the action that corresponds with that tile regardless of whether it is something that will hurt her best friend or something that will be a regular chore. She cannot back out once the tile is chosen. At first the game is fun but soon it gets out of control. Will Monica ever stop playing or will the game take over her life?
