Chesterfield County Public Library

Read 2 Rover Reading Improvement Program

Chesterfield County Public Library is pleased to host Read 2 Rover, a program started by Caring Canines that is designed to help children become better readers. Certified Therapy Dogs sit quietly next to children while they read, thus providing comfort and companionship to children who struggle with reading or who simply want to improve their reading.

Studies have shown that children who have difficulty reading in front of teachers, parents or their peers feel comfortable reading to a dog. For children struggling with reading, the comfort and companionship of the therapy dogs helps to turn something stressful into an activity that is fun and comforting.

The excitement of being able to sit next to the dogs while they read and the reward of playing with the dogs once the children have finished their reading assignment is the motivation that makes this program so successful.

Caring Canines consists of a variety of dog breeds. Each dog is tested under CGC (the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen certification) and TDI (Therapy Dogs International) guidelines. All of Caring Canine’s dogs are certified under the TDI program. Each dog is temperament tested to ensure the dog’s comfort and reliability in a variety of settings and situations. Caring Canines is a volunteer program with over fifty members that has been providing Certified Therapy Dogs to nursing homes, hospitals and schools since 1999. Currently, Read 2 Rover is available at the Central Library.
