Juvenile Detention Home

Post-Dispositional Program

Purpose and Philosophy

The Chesterfield Detention Home’s Post-Dispositional Program was established in 2004 to provide the courts an alternative to committing youths to the Department of Juvenile Justice in accordance with the Code of Virginia Section 16.1-284.1. Juveniles are sentenced to six months and receive a suspended commitment to the Department of Juvenile Justice. The key concept for this program is the balanced approach. Service plans are developed based on public safety, accountability and competency development.  The program is structured to achieve behavioral and cognitive changes for the juveniles.  It is designed to incorporate awareness, accountability and responsibility in a positive and proactive atmosphere to meet the treatment, educational and behavioral needs of each juvenile. The objective is to return the juvenile to the community as a functional and productive member of society.

Admission

Juveniles must meet these basic requirements for admission to post-dispositional detention:

  • Be at least 14 years of age
  • Be a resident of Chesterfield County or Colonial Heights
  • Be covered under family health insurance (parent/legal guardian provides any medications).
  • Have an IQ of at least 75.

Additional requirements:

  • Found to have committed an offense, which, if committed by an adult, would be punishable by confinement in a state or local corrections facility.
  • Has not been and is not currently adjudicated delinquent or found guilty of a violent, juvenile felony.
  • Has not been released from the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice within the previous 18 months.
  • The interests of the juvenile and the community require the juvenile to be placed under legal restraint or discipline.
  • Other placements will not serve the best interests of the juvenile.
  • The juvenile is currently on probation—a probation officer will actively participate with the post-dispositional treatment team to develop service and after-care plans.
  • Parent or legal guardian must be available to participate actively in the program.
