Can we talk turkey - and more? Holiday hotlines can provide much needed
answers for pre-party panic or dine-in desperation. For nutritional advice
and helpful suggestions, call the experts at these national hot lines.
- Chocolate - (800) 468-1714 - Information about cooking with Hershey
products is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Information
about pasta and other products is also available through this number.
- (800) NESTLES - Nestle Toll House Baking Information Line offers
general and chocolate-baking assistance Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-9
p.m., through Jan. 5; and Nov. 23-24, Dec. 28-29, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. (Monday
through Friday, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m., starting Jan. 6).
- Dietetics - (800) 366-1655 - The American Dietetic Association nutrition
hot line with registered dietitians opens Dec. 1, Monday-Friday, 10
a.m.- 5 p.m. (recorded messages at all other times.)
- Seafood - (800)- FDA- 4010- Information on seafood can be found using
this hotline.
- General baking - (800) 328- 6787 - General Mills Consumer Service
answers recipe questions about baking and gives nutritional information
for General Mills products Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30
p.m. For other General Mills products, see toll-free number on package.
- (800) 782-9606 - Land O' Lakes Holiday Baking Hotline answers questions
and gives advice about baking, starts Nov. 1 and operates daily through
Dec. 24 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Callers will receive a leaflet of year-round
baking tips and recipes for holiday sweets.
- (800) 431-1001 - Kraft and General Foods offers baking assistance
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- (800) 232- 8800 - Dole Consumer Center answers questions or discusses
problems concerning Dole packaged products Monday through Friday, 11
a.m. - 8:30 p.m.
- Meat and poultry - (800) 535- 4555 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's
Meat & Poultry hot line offers safe handling, storage, and cooking
tips as well as information about ordering foods by mail Monday through
Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Through Nov. 30, Monday through Friday, 9
a.m. to 5 p.m. (including Nov. 23-24, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Thanksgiving
Day, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.).
- Sodium - (800) 622-3274 - Mrs. Dash's Sodium Information hot line
tells you the sodium content of fresh, processed and fast foods and
answers questions about salt-restricted diets. It also gives information
on Molly McButter and provides various recipes Monday through Friday,
9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- (800) 323- 5316 - The NutraSweet Company provides nutrition information
about Equal sweetener Monday- Friday, 10 a.m. -4 p.m.
- Turkey - (800) 323- 4848 - The Butterball Turkey Talk-Line answers
questions ranging from how much turkey to buy to what to do with leftovers,
and offers a free cookbook calendar. Open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m., through Nov. 27 (except Nov. 23-24, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.); Thanksgiving
Day, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Nov. 29 to Dec. 23, Monday through Friday,
9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- (800) 745-4000 - The Reynolds Turkey Information Line - Gives
instructions and roasting times for turkey using several cooking methods,
and offers free holiday recipe brochures. Open 24 hours a day through
Decemeber 27.
- Yeast baking - (800) 777- 4959 - The Fleischmann's Yeast Bakers'
Help Liine - Answers yeast-baking questions Monday through Friday, 10
a.m. to 8 p.m.
- (800) 445-4716 - Red Star Yeast and Products - Offers baking assistance
Monday through Friday, a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
- Household Hints - (800) 524-1328 - This line offers cleaning tips
for using Arm & Hammer products Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. top
4 p.m.
- AT&T Toll-Free 800 Directory - (800) 426-8686 - The directory
lists toll-free numbers for companies throughout the country and has
a yellow-page section listing companies and organizations by the type
of product or service they offer. Internet directory also available.
- Altrist Co. - Food Preservation - (800) 240-3340 - This includes the
Ball and Kerr Home Canning Hotline.
