Yoshino Japanese Cryptomeria
Cryptomeria japonica ‘Yoshino’

Form
Pyramidal or conical with a stout trunk and erect, wide spreading branches. Graceful.

Leaves
Evergreen, spirally arranged, awl shaped, 4-angled, ¼ to ¾" long

Fall Color
Bronze green.

Stem/Buds/Bark
Green stem with spreading and drooping branchlets. Reddish brown bark which peels in long strips.

Flowers
Inconspicuous and unisexual flowers.

Fruit
Cones are terminal, globular ½ to 1" broad and dark brown, with 20 – 30 scales each with 3 – 5 seeds.

Landscape Uses
This species thrives in the southern states. The tree is graceful and handsome. Useful as a tree for the avenue or in the home landscape.

Culture
Prefers rich and deep, light, permeable, acid soil with lots of moisture. Needs protection from high winds.

Insects – None serious

Diseases – Leaf blight, leaf spot, branch dieback

Other Cultivars
var. ‘Compacta" – Compact, short needled. ‘Elegans’ – Tall and bushy, soft feathery summer folieage. ‘Globosa’ – Dome shaped growing 2 –3’high. Rust color in winter. Other cultivars available.
