Form
Small multi-stemmed tree or large shrub with open, spreading
crown; frequently wider than tall.
Leaves
Alternate, simple leaves are smooth margined, 1 ¼"
- 3 ¼" long and 1 ¼" - 2" wide, rounded
oval shape, green or blue-green.
Fall Color
Scarlet or orange, yellow-red-purple.
Stem/Buds/Bark
Thick stem turns from green to brown, has purple bloom. Bark
remains smooth even as tree ages.
Flowers
Small yellow flowers, 1/8" long, occur in long panicles
at the end of new branches. Flowers are not showy but the flower/fruit
stalks are hairy, and as these long hairs change in color they create
the showy, smokey pink effect.
Flowering Time
Flowers occur from May to June but the smokey effect of the
hairs may last until late fall.
Fruit
Small 1/6" kidney-shaped drupe.
Landscape Uses
Smoketree can be used as an accent plant in a shrub border or
in mass planting.
Major Landscape Features
Small specimen tree or screen; showy "smoke"; purple
cultivars; very site adaptable.
