Form
Small tree or large multi-stemmed shrub with broad, rounded
crown.
Leaves

Simple, opposite leaf with 7 or 9 doubly toothed lobes, individual
lobes 2 1/2" to 4" long. Leaf color of species is green
with cultivars of purple-red to dark red. Many cultivars have very
finely dissected leaves.
Fall Color
Yellow, bronzed or purplish for the species; cultivars can display
brilliant red coloration.
Stem/Buds/Bark
Thin, smooth stems are green or reddish when young, changing
to brown or gray-brown with age. The edge of leaf scars are elevated
and form a collar around the small green or brown buds.
Flowers
Small, cream to purple cup-like blooms; not showy.
Flowering Time
April to May.
Fruit
The 1/2" to 1" samara is often a good red color, ripening
from September to October and persisting.

Specimen tree, accent plant, bonsai, patio or container tree.
God for small, partially shaded entry areas and townhouse yards.

Culture
Japanese maple requires a location protected from drying
winds, especially if the soil is dry or poor. It prefers moist
soil and high humidity in a somewhat sheltered location. This
tree responds to fertilization. If shade is excessive, purple-leaved
cultivars will remain green. Leaves may burn in summer in
sunny locations in Tidewater.
