Chesterfield Arboretum

Winged euonymus,
burning bush
Euonymus alatus

Form
A rounded, flat-topped shrub with upright to horizontally spreading branches.

Leaves
Opposite, simple leaf, 1" – 3" long and 1/2" to 1 1/2" wide, is elliptical to oval with a finely toothed margin. Color is medium to dark green.

Fall Color
Brilliant red. Color is very consistent but may not be as intense if grown in shade.

Stem/Buds/Bark
The green to brown stems usually have 2 to 4 wide, corky wings or ridges, a good winter identification characteristic. Numerous lateral buds are green-brown-red and occur at breaks in the otherwise continuous wings.

Flowers
Yellowish flowers are in clusters of three on a short stalk; not showy.

Flowering Time
May through June.

Fruit
A cream to pinkish capsule which dries and opens to expose orange-red seeds. The fruit may be showy in the fall if the leaves drop before the seeds.

Landscape Uses
Winged euonymous is used for just about every landscape need. It is planted for hedges, screens, massings and plant groupings. This shrub can be a specimen plant or part of a shrub border. The red fall foliage is especially effective next to water. It is also a good foundation plant because of its horizontal lines.

Major Landscape Features
Medium-sized shrub; many landscape uses; specimen; excellent fall color; showy fruit; corky or winged stems; site adaptable.

Hardiness Range
3 – 8

Native Habitat
NE Asia to China

Height
8 – 15 feet

Growth Rate
Slow to moderate

Spread
8 – 15 feet

Exposure
Sun to shade

Culture
Winged euonymous is pH adaptable and grown in a variety of soil types although extremes in available moisture will cause problems. It does not tolerate waterlogged conditions and will show stress in drought. This shrub does best in a well-drained soil. It is easy to transplant. Winged euonymous can be sheared or pruned heavily.

Pest Problems
Insects – On rare occasion, euonymous scale.

Diseases – None serious.

Cultivars
"Compactus" – A slower and lower growing cultivar with a more brilliant red fall color but stems with less corkiness.
