Form
Large shrub with multi-stems or small rounded tree.

Leaves
Opposite, simple, 1 ½" – 3", 3 lobed, with middle lobe much longer. Doubly serrate, dark green above and light green underneath. Petiole ½" to ¾"

Fall Color
Yellow and red.

Stem/Buds/Bark
Slender, gray-brown stem. Small reddish brown buds 1/8" long. Grayish brown bark on older branches.

Flowers
Yellowish white, fragrant, in small panicles of 1 – 1 ½" long.

Flowering Time
April – May

Fruit
Dry fruit bearing a wing. The fruit is ¾ to 1" long. The wings are parallel and are red to brown.

Landscape Uses
Excellent for use as a patio tree, screen, grouping, or massing. Small specimen tree which can also be used for above ground container planting. .

Major Landscape Features
One of the first trees to leaf out. Good fall color in full sun situations.

Culture

‘Compactum’– More dense and compact. ‘Flame’ – Dense shrub or tree with red fall color. Other cultivars available.
