Family and Community Sciences programs provide informal education that increases knowledge, influences attitudes, teaches skills, and inspires aspirations. Through the adoption and application of these practices, the quality of individual, family, and community life is improved. Family and Community Sciences brings specialist, agent, and volunteer expertise together to address the needs and priority issues facing Virginia's families. Five specific goals are addressed:

1) To provide education from numerous disciplines addressing societal issues of concern to individuals and families;

2) To assist communities in analyzing the status of families and identifying appropriate community action to meet the needs of families;

3) To train volunteers and program assistants to assist the Family and Consumer Sciences & Community Initiatives program;

4) To motivate people to become involved in community issues and to develop leadership potential in those people;

5) To collaborate with other Extension program areas, and form partnerships with other agencies, community organizations, and educational groups.

Food Preservation Tips

The Virginia Cooperative Extension's Family and Consumer Sciences programs are delivered to assist families and communities with critical issues related to economic stability and quality of life. Programming is focused primarily around three broad areas: nutrition and wellness; management, housing, and consumer education; and family and human development.

SCNEP - Smart Choices Nutrition Education Program

The SCNEP program enrolls members of food stamp households to participate in a series of educational lessons designed to address dietary needs for prevention of chronic disease and health promotion and to encourage wise use of food stamps and other resources. Extension Program Assistants deliver these lessons to individuals or groups based on their assessed needs. Nutritional needs of middle aged and older adults who are not eligible for WIC and EFNEP are targeted.

Canning

The Virginia Cooperative Extension provides programs covering broad areas. For information regarding Canning and Preserving and other topics, visit the following site: Health, Nutrition, and Foods.
