Pretrial Services
Pretrial Services is a program that provides background information to judicial officials at a defendant’s arraignment. Investigations provide social, family, employment, and criminal history information to the courts in Chesterfield County and the City of Colonial Heights, at the defendant’s first court appearance. Recommendations are then made as to the status of a defendant’s bond. Pretrial Officers are available to supervise defendants released on bond and referred from Chesterfield/Colonial Heights courts or transferred from any other Virginia jurisdictions. By providing drug and alcohol testing, weekly contacts, and opportunities for substance abuse evaluation and/or treatment, Pretrial Services is an alternative to holding defendants in jail pending trial. As an alternative to incarceration, Pretrial Services provides cost savings to the localities.
Services:
- Drug and Alcohol Testing
- Daily or Weekly Contacts
- Substance Abuse Evaluations
- Referral for Substance Abuse Treatment
- Electronic Monitoring
- Video Arraignment
Pretrial Services also works in cooperation with Chesterfield/Colonial Heights Drug Court and the Dual Treatment Track (DTT). Since pretrial investigators are one of the first contacts a defendant has with the judicial process, investigators are able to screen in appropriate candidates for the Drug Court and/or DTT option.
