What is the Community Programs Office

Provides educational opportunities to the community to reduce the number and severity of fires and injuries.

Research shows a majority of residential fire injuries and fatalities directly involve

  • cooking related kitchen fires
  • occurring inside single-family dwellings
  • most likely when the victim is asleep

Each program focuses on a set of objectives that is relevant to the age group being taught from school age child to the senior citizen, to reduce known causes of fire, injury and fatalities.

Safety Education Programs

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

The Remembering When: Fire and Fall Prevention  program was

  • developed by NFPA and the CDC to help older adults live safely at home for as long as possible.
  • designed to be implemented to reach older adults through group presentations and home visits
  • centered around 16 key safety messages (eight fire prevention and eight fall prevention)
  • developed by experts from national and local safety organizations
  • tested by focus groups in high-fire-risk states
