Report on the 1996 Bond Referendum ProjectsLibrariesThe mission of the Chesterfield County Public Library is to bring people and information together in a cost-effective manner so that citizens may enrich their own lives. The library encourages and fosters reading at all age levels, whether for recreation or information, supports education and lifelong learning, and helps the public obtain information. Voter support of the 1996 referendum positioned the county to improve on this mission. Bond funding, supplemented with general fund revenues, has allowed the county to deliver two new libraries and a new information system.
Chester Library - $4.72 million
LaPrade Library - $5.48 millionThe new 20,000 square foot facility located on Hull Street Road, west of the old location and across from Lynview Drive, will replace the existing facility. The new facility opened in September, 2001. Improvements include an expanded media space; quiet study, reading, reference and children’s areas; a public meeting room; increased parking and access to more computer terminals. Library Information Network of Chesterfield - $3.2 millionThe Chesterfield County Libraries collection is now much more accessible electronically. Residents can search for media in the county’s system. Media can be reserved and renewed with this new system through internet connections in all branch libraries, or from home with personal computers. This system has been operational since October 1999, and expanded capabilities are being planned.
