How do I adopt an animal? 

  • The animal shelter has a large variety of dogs and cats available for adoption. Please visit the Adopt a Pet section for detailed information about the adoption process. 

Do I need a dog license? 

  • Any dog four months of age or older must have a license.

What will I need to purchase a dog license? 

  • To obtain a dog license, you must:
    • provide a certificate of current rabies vaccination
    • pay the license tax
  • You can qualify for a discounted license tax if you provide documentation proving your dog has been spayed or neutered.

How much does a dog license cost and when is it due? 

  • Chesterfield County dogs must be licensed annually.
  • The license tax is payable on January 1 and must be paid no later than January 31 of each year.
  • The fees are as follows:
    • Male dog: $7
    • Female dog: $7
    • Unsexed dog: $5 (must provide proof of spaying/neutering)
    • Kennel - 20 dogs: $25 (must be zoned agricultural)
    • Kennel - 50 dogs: $35 (must be zoned agricultural)

Where do I get a dog license? 

  • You can obtain a dog license at several county businesses, or by mail.
  • To obtain a dog license by mail:
    • Print and complete a dog license application. (You can view a sample form.)
    • Include the completed license application, a copy of the rabies certificate, proof that the dog has been spayed/neutered (if applicable) and check or money order payable to Treasurer, Chesterfield County.

How do I report a lost pet? 

  • If your dog or cat is lost:  
    • Submit a Lost Pet report.
    • Visit the shelter to look for your pet and review the lost and found pets book at the front desk.
    • Post signs in your area in the event someone has found your pet.

How do I report a found pet? 

  • If you find a dog or cat:  
    • Submit a Found Pet report.
    • Visit the shelter to review the lost and found pets book at the front desk.
    • Post signs in your area in the event someone near you may be looking for their pet.

How do I report animal cruelty or neglect? 

  • Please call the 804-748-1251, the police non-emergency number, if you need to speak with an Animal Services officer about:
    • animal neglect or cruelty
    • dogs running at large
    • a stray dog that has been found
    • or any other non-emergency Animal Services issue

  • Animal Services does not handle calls for service related to barking dogs. Please call the police non-emergency number, 804-748-1251, to speak to a police officer.

How many dogs can you have in Chesterfield? 

  • Ownership of more than three adult dogs per family is prohibited in any residential district without a special exception permit. If you need a special permit, contact the Chesterfield County Zoning Office at (804) 748-1050.

What is Chesterfield County’s leash law? 

  • Under Chesterfield County's current leash law, dogs must be on a leash at all times when not on the dog owner's property.
